Steve Pomahac has called the Rockton area home for over five decades, and during that time, he has built a remarkable legacy of service, leadership, and community involvement.
Steve's journey began in the Kinnikinnick School District, where he attended as a young student before moving on to Hononegah High School. After high school, he continued his education at Rock Valley College, where he earned a degree in Building Construction Technology. Equipped with both practical skills and a strong work ethic, he launched a successful career in carpentry, working in the trade from 1973 to 1988.
In 1988, Steve made a career change and entered the insurance industry. Around that same time, he began stepping into more formal leadership roles within the community. He served as the President of the Rockton Chamber of Commerce for six and a half years, bringing fresh energy and a spirit of collaboration to the organization.
One of Steve’s proudest contributions during this time was founding the first Old Settlers Days event—a celebration that quickly became a cornerstone of the community’s calendar. Thanks to his ongoing dedication and leadership, the event thrived for over 25 years, bringing people together year after year in celebration of Rockton’s heritage.
In addition to his civic and professional work, Steve also gave back in a deeply personal way. He served as a firefighter with the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department for 25 years, demonstrating his commitment to the safety and well-being of his neighbors.
Steve first became involved with Macktown in 2005, drawn by a love of local history and a desire to help preserve and promote the story of the region. Since then, he has been a driving force behind many of the site’s initiatives and improvements. Today, he serves as the President of the Macktown Board, where his leadership, historical knowledge, and deep community ties continue to guide the organization forward.
Whether building homes, supporting local businesses, fighting fires, or helping preserve local history, Steve Pomahac has spent a lifetime building up the community he so proudly calls home.
